The Stolin district is formed on 15th January, 1940. It is situated in the southeast of Brest region and belongs to the most south districts of Brestchina. In the south the district shares its borders with Luninets district, in the west - with Pinsk district of Brest region, in the east - with Zhitkovichi district of Gomel region. In the south our neighbours are Zarechnenskiy, Dubrovitskiy and Rokitnovskiy districts of Rovno region of the Ukraine. The south border of the district coincides with a state border of the Republic of Belarus.

The Stolin district occupies the area 3342 km? and is according to its territory the biggest district not only in the region, but also in the whole republic. The extension of the district from west to the east makes 100 km, and from north to the south - over 70 km. The present area of the district in a general way was formed in 1961, when to the Stolin district the David-Gorodokskiy district joined.

The territory of the district is situated in the zone of Belarusian Polessye. The relief of the locality is flat, so heights’ overfalls are small here. Sand-dune eminences in the south of the district are tracks of the glacial epoch. The highest point of Stolinshchina is 168,5 m above average annually level of the Baltic sea, but the lowest is 123,1 m. The minerals are presented here by deposits of peat, high-fusing and easily melted loams, building and quartz sand, combustible schist, brown coal and others.

The geographical particularity of Stolinshchina is a presence of rich network of rivers, lakes, artificial reservoirs. The district is well provided with water resources. Through the district territory 17 large and small rivers run. The largest of them are Pripyat, Goryn, Styrj, Stviga, Ljva and Mostva. They influence upon a vital activity of the district at frequent flood waters.

The most known object of a reclaimed nature is the landscape park "Mankovichi", being a nature monument of republican importance. The park was laid in 1885 by the princess Maria Radzivill. Interesting monuments of garden-and-park culture end of the 19th - begin of the 20th centuries are the parks "Novo-Berezhnoe" and "Nizhni Terebezhov".

The Stolin district is rich in woods. The forests occupy the area over 128 thous. he, that makes 35% of general territory of the district. Among woods dominate coniferous and black alder-tree sorts. The industrial development and care of forests 2 large enterprises realise - the state forestry "Stolin forestry", which structure 7 forestries and the state enterprise "Polessye forestry" includes. The total area of agricultural grounds makes 91970 he. Agriculture of the district feels a deficit of farmlands. An average point of agricultural grounds is 28, 8, ploughed fields - 30,5. The main land users in the district are 23 agricultural and industrial complexes, the communal unitary industrial enterprise "Mankovichi", the joint-stock company "Gorynskiy agricultural plant". The district counts 21 farms.

Administratively the Stolin district is divided into 20 councils, including the David-Gorodokskiy town and the Rechitskiy rural councils. Presently the district counts 98 settlements, including towns Stolin and David-Gorodok and also the worker village Rechitsa. 86300 persons lived in the district as to the date January, 1st, 2004. Numerically the rural population dominates and makes 60100 persons. The town and worker village counts 26,2 thous. persons. Average density of the district population makes 38,7 persons on one km?. However the population is assigned on the district territory unevenly.
